Basically it was founded by the Chardravarman who is the son of God Chandra.Chandela dynasty built the various temple, many of which are orginated from the lake and survived for five centuries. From the past time there was the several number of temples from which only 25 remain back. All the temples are large, well decorated and with the beauty & charm. It is only the dream of Chandelas which turns in to the stone and built so many temples in Khajuraho.

Khajuraho is situated in the state of the Madhya Pradesh with the group of various Hindu and Jain Temples. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India and famous for the Nagara-style architectural and erotic sculptures. All the temples of the Khajuraho are built together and dedicated to the Hinduism and to Jainism which accepts the traditions and religious views among Hindus and Jains.

Khajuraho was known as 'Khajur-Vahika' or 'Khajjurpura' in the ancient times because of its golden date palms (known as 'khajur') that lined the gates of this city.According to the account of the medieval court poet Hemvati was the daughter of Hemraj, who is the priest of the Kashi.Hemvati, his widowed daughter could not bear the possibility of my stigma on her father's reputation and prayed to the Moon God to uphold the word of the priest.

Khajuraho temples were in active use through the end of 12th century, this change in the 13th century under the command of the Muslim Sultan Qutb-ud-din Aibak, attacked and seized the Chandela kingdom. The name Khajuraho is derived from ancient Sanskrit. Desai states that Kharjuravahaka also means scorpion bearer which is the symbolic name for deity Shiva.
